Houston 3PL Fulfillment, Run From a Warehouse in Austin

Start with the part most location pages bury: we do not have a building in Houston. We run one warehouse and it is in Austin, roughly 165 road miles up the road. For a lot of Houston brands that is close enough to be invisible, because Houston is the lowest USPS zone from Austin of any major metro on the chart. For some brands it is not close enough, and this page says which is which before you get on a call.

Overview

What Is a Houston 3PL?

A Houston 3PL is a third-party logistics provider that stores a brand's inventory and picks, packs and ships its orders for the Houston market. The warehouse itself does not always sit inside Houston. What decides whether a location works is the shipping zone to your customers, the road distance, and how often you need to stand in the building.

That last sentence is doing a lot of work, so here is our own position on it plainly. RitePrep operates one warehouse and it is in Austin, Texas. There is no Houston facility, no Houston staff, no Houston address and no port operation. If you want a provider with a building inside the Houston city limits, we are not it, and the sections below say exactly when that is the right thing to want.

What we can show you is the geography. On the official USPS Domestic Zone Chart effective September 1, 2026, Houston is Zone 2 from our Austin origin. That is the lowest zone of the 24 major US metros we publish zone data for. For comparison, the same chart puts Houston at Zone 6 from a Los Angeles origin and Zone 7 from a Newark one.

Why Zone 2 Matters More Than a Houston Address

Domestic ground parcel is priced by distance band, not by city name. The carrier compares the origin ZIP Code with the destination ZIP Code, converts the gap into a zone, and prices the parcel on that zone plus its weight and dimensions. A warehouse inside Houston shipping to a Houston customer is in the lowest band there is. A warehouse in Austin shipping to the same customer is one band above it.

That one band is the whole difference on a Houston order, and it is a smaller difference than most brands expect when they start searching by city. Where the gap opens up is not price but presence: a local warehouse can hand a parcel to a same-day courier, and one in Austin cannot.

The full zone table, the method behind it and the three origins we compared are on our shipping zones from Austin page, linked further down.

When a Houston 3PL Is Genuinely the Better Choice

There are three situations where a provider with a building in Houston beats us, and none of them are close calls. The first is same-day local delivery inside Houston. That needs stock already in the metro and a local courier relationship, and 165 miles of highway does not survive contact with a same-day promise.

The second is importing through the Port of Houston. If your containers land at Port Houston and you want to avoid an inland drayage leg, a warehouse near the port removes a move from your supply chain that we cannot remove for you. We are not a licensed customs broker, we hold no motor carrier or broker authority, and we do not run drayage.

The third is simply needing to be at the building often. If your operation involves walking the floor weekly, inspecting every inbound lot yourself, or collecting orders in person on a regular basis, a round trip that eats most of a working day is a tax you will get tired of paying. Occasional visits are fine. A weekly habit is not.

Three origins, the same Houston customer. A Houston warehouse wins the local rows and it should. What it does not win is the rest of Texas or the rest of the country, and for most ecommerce brands those rows carry more volume than the local ones do.

Zones are USPS only, taken from the USPS Domestic Zone Chart effective September 1, 2026 using 3-digit origin ZIP Codes, with the USPS markers removed. The Zone 1 figure for a Houston warehouse is the definition of the first distance band rather than a measurement of any particular building. UPS and FedEx publish their own zone charts and their zones differ. Nothing here is a rate or a transit time commitment.

The challenge

What Goes Wrong When You Search for a 3PL by City

Searching '3PL Houston' is a sensible thing to do. The results make it harder than it should be, because publishing a city page costs nothing and operating a warehouse costs a great deal.

01

A page written about the Houston market can quietly mean a building in another state, and it rarely says so.

02

The word logistics covers freight forwarding, customs brokerage, truck brokerage and fulfillment, and the results mix all four.

03

Directory listicles rank well and tell you almost nothing about whether a provider can handle your SKU profile.

04

Port access gets sold as a benefit to brands whose inventory never touches a container.

05

The ZIP code of the building your pallets will actually sit in is the one fact nobody leads with.

We would rather answer that question in the first paragraph than the tenth. Our building is in Austin, and the honest question is whether the 165 miles between it and you change anything for your orders.

What's included

What We Handle for Houston Brands

All of it happens in one building in Austin. Nothing is transferred to a partner site in Houston or anywhere else, because there is no partner site.

Inside our Austin warehouse
01

Receiving Inbound From Texas Suppliers

Inbound pallets and parcels are counted against your packing list and put away into slotted storage. A move from a Houston-area supplier is a same-state regional haul, not a cross-country line haul.

02

Pick and Pack for DTC Orders

Orders sync from your store, get picked, verified at the pack station and tendered to the carrier. The mechanics are covered on our pick and pack page.

03

Cases and Pallets for Wholesale

Retail and distributor orders are built to the buyer's routing guide rather than packed like a consumer parcel. See B2B fulfillment.

04

Kitting, Prep and Amazon Replenishment

Bundles, inserts and barcode labeling happen here, and FBA prep draws on the same stock pool as your own storefront orders. See also kitting services.

05

Lot and Date Rotation for Consumables

Food, beverage, supplement and personal care stock is picked by date rather than by whichever pallet is nearest, which is the part of CPG fulfillment that breaks first when it is ignored.

06

Returns Back Into Sellable Stock

Returns come back to the same Austin building, get inspected, and either go back to sellable stock or to a disposition you agreed in advance. See returns management.

If you are earlier in the process, start with what is a 3PL and types of logistics providers, which is the page that separates a fulfillment 3PL from a freight forwarder or a truck broker. When you are ready to compare quotes, the 3PL pricing breakdown and how to choose a 3PL are the two worth reading first.

How it works

How a Houston Brand Starts With Us

01

1. Tell Us Where Your Orders Go

The share of your volume that stays inside Houston is the number that decides this. If it is most of your orders and they need to arrive same day, stop here and hire someone local.

02

2. Send Your Real Figures

Order volume, units per order, SKU count and roughly how much space your stock needs. Anything quoted without those is guesswork with a decimal point on it.

03

3. Connect Your Store

Your store or marketplace connects so orders route to the warehouse without anyone rekeying them, and counts flow back the other way.

04

4. Ship Inventory Up to Austin

From the Houston area this is a short same-state move. Stock is counted in against your purchase order and slotted before it goes live to sell.

05

5. Come and See It Once

Most Houston brands drive up once during onboarding and then never need to again. Ask and we will arrange it.

Good fit?

Which Houston Brands This Suits

The Austin origin is a good answer for some Houston brands and a poor one for others. These are the ones where it holds up.

Houston brands shipping parcels nationally, where most orders leave Texas anyway
Brands whose Houston customers are happy with standard ground rather than same day
Sellers who want one stock pool feeding DTC, wholesale and Amazon instead of three
CPG, food and supplement brands that need date rotation and lot handling done carefully
Brands that need prep, kitting or rework that does not fit a national network's standard playbook
Houston brands who want to be able to drive to their inventory occasionally, not weekly
Why RitePrep

The Trade, in Both Directions

We would rather you picked the right model than picked us, so here is what the Austin origin buys a Houston brand and what it costs one.

One Zone Away, Not One Coast Away

Houston is Zone 2 from our origin, the lowest of the 24 metros on the official chart. The full zone table shows how the rest of the country compares.

Close Enough to Drive To

A Houston brand can be at the warehouse and back inside a working day when a launch, a recall or a quality question needs eyes on the actual stock.

One Origin, No Routing Decision

Every order ships from the same place, so there is never a question of which site holds a SKU, and no split shipment because it was in the wrong one.

The Operator Answers the Phone

Questions go to the people who run the floor rather than into a queue that escalates to whichever site is holding your pallets.

The Honest Limit on Speed

We cannot do same-day delivery inside Houston, and we will not imply otherwise. Standard ground from Austin is what a Houston customer gets, and the zone is the only thing we control.

The Honest Limit on Scope

We are not a licensed customs broker, we do not place cargo insurance, and we hold no motor carrier or broker authority. We do not run Port of Houston drayage. Where we help with international freight it is alongside the licensed parties, not in place of them.

If your Houston volume needs same-day delivery, or your containers land at Port Houston and the drayage leg is the cost you are trying to remove, a Houston operator is the better answer and we will say so on the call.

Imports

If Your Freight Comes Through the Port of Houston

Houston is a major import gateway, and for some brands that is the entire reason they are searching for a Houston warehouse. This is worth being precise about, because it is where a fulfillment provider is most likely to oversell itself:

Clearing an import is the work of a licensed customs broker, and we are not one
Moving a container from the port to a warehouse is drayage, which needs motor carrier or broker authority we do not hold
Cargo insurance is placed by a licensed party, and we do not place it
A warehouse near the port removes the inland leg between Houston and Austin, and that leg is a real cost we cannot remove for you
If your import volume is a container or two a year, the inland leg is usually noise next to everything else in the quote

We receive inbound freight after it has cleared and after somebody else has moved it. That is the honest boundary of what we do. Our pages on international freight and what freight forwarding actually is explain who does the rest.

Vetting

How to Check Any Houston 3PL, Including Us

The listicles ranking for this search will not tell you these things, so ask them yourself. They take one call and they sort the field fast:

What is the ZIP code of the building my inventory will physically sit in? Not the city on the page, the building
Is inbound freight delivered to that building, or transferred there from somewhere else
Are you a fulfillment provider, a freight forwarder, a customs broker or a truck broker? Several firms in these results are not the same kind of company at all
Can I schedule a visit, and how quickly does the answer arrive
What is the zone chart for your origin ZIP code, so I can price my own order history against it
What happens when something goes wrong at four in the afternoon, and who specifically picks up

Our answers: the building is in Austin, inbound comes straight to it, we are a fulfillment provider and nothing else, visits are arranged case by case, and the zone chart is published on this site. Run the same six questions at everyone else on the results page.

Texas

Houston, Austin and the Texas Triangle

Three pages on this site answer three different versions of the same question, and it is worth knowing which one you are actually asking:

This page is about distance and zone: your market is 165 road miles and one USPS zone from our origin, and here is the trade-off that creates
Our Austin 3PL page is about the building itself: who runs it, what happens inside it, and how to verify a provider really operates one
Our Texas 3PL page is about origin geography: whether shipping nationally from the middle of the country beats shipping from a coast
Austin sits on the I-35 corridor between San Antonio and the Dallas-Fort Worth area, inside the triangle those metros form with Houston
We do not operate warehouses in Houston, Dallas or San Antonio, and we serve brands in all three from Austin

If you are weighing a Houston provider against us, the Texas 3PL page is the one with the national zone data and the Austin 3PL page is the one about the warehouse. This page is about the 165 miles in between.

Proof

One Warehouse, and It Is in Austin

No Houston building, no partner sites, no borrowed addresses

We criticise national providers for publishing city pages about buildings they do not have. That only means anything if we hold ourselves to it on a page like this one.

Every order we ship leaves the Austin warehouse, including every order going to Houston
There is no Houston facility, no Houston staff and no Houston address anywhere in our operation
We publish the city and region rather than the street address, which is a deliberate choice
Ask about seeing the building before you commit anything and we will arrange it case by case
