What Is Pick and Pack Fulfillment?
Pick and pack fulfillment is the warehouse process of pulling the individual items on a customer order from storage, checking them against the order, packing them into a box or mailer, applying a shipping label, and handing the package to a carrier. It is the step between order placed and order shipped.
Picking and packing are two jobs, not one. Picking is a travel problem: getting a person or a cart to the right locations in the right sequence. Packing is a verification and materials problem: confirming the right items are in hand, choosing a box that protects them without shipping air, and producing a label the carrier will scan.
At a few orders a day, one person can pick and pack from a shelf in a spare room. The process is what breaks first as volume rises. Walking time per order stops being free, similar-looking SKUs start going into the wrong boxes, and packing hours crowd out the rest of the business. That is usually the point where brands either restructure their own process or move it to a 3PL.
What Is Included in a Pick and Pack Service?
A pick and pack service covers receiving your inventory and checking it in, storing it in locations chosen for retrieval speed, taking orders from your store or marketplace, picking each order, verifying it at a packing station, packing it with the right materials, buying and applying the shipping label, tendering the package to the carrier, and passing tracking back to your store.
Quotes are usually built from the same parts: receiving, storage per pallet or bin, a pick fee for the first item in an order, a smaller fee for each additional item, packaging materials, and postage. Two quotes with the same headline pick fee can land far apart once the additional-item fee and materials are counted, so compare the whole structure rather than the first line.
Pick and Pack vs Full Ecommerce Fulfillment
Pick and pack is one stage inside fulfillment, not a synonym for it. Ecommerce fulfillment is the whole chain: inbound receiving, storage, inventory counts, picking and packing, shipping, and returns. Pick, pack and ship is the same stage with the carrier handoff named out loud, which some providers use to signal that postage and label buying are included.
In practice most brands do not buy picking on its own. They buy it as part of a fulfillment arrangement where the same warehouse also holds the stock, so it is worth checking what a pick and pack quote assumes about storage, receiving, and returns before comparing it with anything else.

Most quotes never name the picking method behind the pick fee. It is a fair question to ask, because the method sets both the labor in each order and where errors tend to appear.
