Net weight vs gross weight in plain terms
Net weight answers one question: how much product is there? Gross weight answers a different one: how much does the whole thing weigh when it is picked up? A candle jar might hold 8 ounces of wax and still weigh well over a pound once the glass, lid, label, and gift box are counted.
One warning before the formulas. The same two words shift meaning depending on the document. On a retail label, net weight is strictly the contents of the container. On a packing list or bill of lading, "net weight" often means the weight of the goods including their retail packaging, with only the pallet, crate, or container treated as tare. Read the definition on the form in front of you rather than assuming.
What is tare weight?
Tare weight is the weight of everything that is not the product. It is the number a scale removes when you press the tare button, and in shipping it stacks up layer by layer:
- Primary packaging: the jar, bottle, pouch, tube, or blister that touches the product, plus its cap and label.
- Secondary packaging: the folding carton, sleeve, or gift box a customer sees on the shelf.
- Tertiary packaging: the master carton, void fill, dividers, and tape used to ship it.
- Unit load: the pallet, slip sheet, corner boards, stretch wrap, and strapping.
- Equipment tare: in freight, the empty weight of the container, trailer, or truck itself.

How to calculate gross weight
Three forms of the same equation:
- Gross weight = net weight + tare weight
- Net weight = gross weight − tare weight
- Tare weight = gross weight − net weight
In a warehouse nobody adds components on paper. You weigh the sealed unit on a calibrated scale and record that as gross weight, then subtract a known tare. The math above is for checking the number, not for producing it.
A worked example
The numbers below are illustrative, chosen to show the arithmetic. Your own components will differ, so weigh them.
Say a brand ships a 12 unit case of candles.
- Each candle contains 8 oz of wax. That is the net weight per unit, and it is what the label declares.
- The jar, lid, and label weigh 10 oz, and the gift box adds 2 oz, so the tare per unit is 12 oz.
- Gross weight per unit is 8 + 12 = 20 oz, or 1.25 lb.
- Twelve units give 96 oz of wax (6 lb net) and 144 oz of unit packaging (9 lb).
- The master carton and dividers add 2 lb, so case tare is 11 lb and case gross weight is 17 lb.
Now palletize it. Forty cases weigh 680 lb gross. Add a wooden pallet at roughly 40 lb plus wrap and strapping, and the pallet ships at about 722 lb gross while carrying only 240 lb of actual product. That ratio is normal, and it is exactly why the two numbers cannot be used interchangeably.
Where net weight is used
- Product labels. US consumer packaged goods must declare the net quantity of contents on the front panel, so shoppers compare products, not containers.
- Customs and trade documents. Commercial invoices and packing lists list net weight per line item, and duties assessed by weight are generally based on it.
- Cost of goods and fill checks. Net weight ties back to formulation, yield, and whether a filling line is running short or giving product away.
Where gross weight is used
- Carrier labels and invoices. Parcel carriers bill the weight that crosses their scale, packaging included.
- Bills of lading and freight class. In LTL shipping, density is gross weight divided by the cubic space the pallet occupies, and density drives the class and the rate.
- Safety and legal limits. Container payload caps, trailer axle weights, pallet rack capacity, and manual lifting guidelines all reference gross weight.

Why the wrong weight costs money
Parcel carriers weigh and measure packages automatically as they move through the network. If the declared weight is lower than the scale reading, the shipper receives a billing adjustment after the fact, often weeks later, when the sale is already booked. Understating weight does not save money, it just delays the invoice and adds a correction fee on top.
On the international side, weight errors show up as:
- Net and gross weights that disagree between the invoice and the packing list.
- Declared container weight that fails against the verified weight taken at the terminal.
- Duty calculated on the wrong basis when the tariff line is weight based.

Dimensional weight: the third number
For parcel, gross weight is only half the story. Carriers also compute a dimensional weight from the box: length times width times height, divided by a dimensional divisor the carrier publishes and periodically changes. You are billed on whichever is greater, the actual gross weight or the dimensional weight.
The practical effect: light, bulky products get charged for the air in the carton. Pillows, apparel sets, and anything shipped in an oversized box are billed on volume, not mass. Right-sizing the carton is usually a bigger lever on shipping cost than shaving grams off the product, which is why choosing the right box size and designing packaging that fits the product pay for themselves quickly.
Keeping your weights accurate
- Weigh and measure every SKU in its final shipping configuration, not from a supplier spec sheet.
- Store net weight, tare weight, gross weight, and carton dimensions as fields on the SKU record so they flow into rate shopping and customs documents automatically.
- Re-weigh after any packaging change. A new insert or a switch from paper to foam moves the number.
- Record pallet tare separately, and use the real pallet weight rather than a rounded guess.
- Reconcile carrier billing adjustments monthly and fix the SKU data that caused them.
